Operate International

The International Community team is also represented by Bert Schollema of the HZ University Applied Sciences. At the launch of the Community questions were asked by the audience about possibilities to study in Zeeland.  There are two universities that operate international in Zeeland. In this newsletter we give to floor to the HZ University of Applied Sciences.

Meet the HZ!

Meet HZ University of Applied Sciences (referred to as HZ):  a one of a kind institution in the Zeeland region. Boasting a top 3 ranking for many years, HZ is home to some 4,800 students. The academic backbone is the collection of 25 bachelor degree programmes, leading to a recognized BA diploma after, in general, 4 years of study. HZ is owner and contributor to 1 master programme, River Delta Development (in conjunction with an academic network), part time adult courses and a number of 2-year Associate degree programmes at Roosendaal. 10 of the academic programmes are offered in English at its Vlissingen and Middelburg locations.

HZ is characterized as the school where students matter: it has a world orientation, and a specific orientation on durability & water, safety, innovation & enterprise. Some 12% of the students join the HZ community from a variety of countries, making for an interesting mix and an international environment. Which is underlined by the input of the student association, the homely feeling at the housing campuses and the connection to the local/regional networks.

Where students matter
At HZ we know our students – students have ample opportunity to create their unique studying process – and more, such as applying to be student ambassador for either SDGs or HZ information exchanges. Teachers and staff put emphasis on individual coaching.. Ask any international student and they will tell you the lecturers and tutors are readily available to assist you when needed. HZ offers good facilities, some brand new - such as the Joint Research Centre built at Middelburg as we speak -  as well as an inclusive atmosphere, from individual services for students with a disability or chronic illness to professional help when needed.

SDG
HZ is thoroughly involved in working with the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals or SDGs: a main key to creating awareness and start working on improving your future. HZ has co-signed the national SDG Charter, runs academic activities built around SDGs, has an SDG Honours programme, runs SDG events such as Purpose College, and more. After all: now is the best time to start influencing your future. To be continued!

Since 2019 HZ offers an English-taught Master programme River Delta Development, a unique joint degree offered by three universities of applied sciences with complementing expertise in the field of water: HZ University of Applied Sciences (coastal regions), Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences (river systems), and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (urban water).

We are developing and offering a growing number of part time programmes for adults that have (some) work experience and wish to go for a career step. These are currently taught in Dutch, although we are interested in your wishes.

Every year the Dutch national ‘Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs’ (Guide to Higher Education) holds a survey of higher education in the Netherlands. Since 2011 the guide has ranked HZ in the top 3 of multidisciplinary Dutch universities of applied sciences. The quality and accessibility of our lecturers and the small student groups are among HZ’s assets. Also, the classrooms, workspaces and computer facilities were rated by students as excellent.
